I prefer printing my hats on lightweight cardstock so they have a little extra firmness.
You will also require:
- Wool for pom pom (lametta can be used as well to create tassles)
- Scissors
- Tape
- Some elastic of fitting it around you head
DIY New Year’s Eve Party Hats for 2026
Creating pom poms for your printable party hats!
I recommend beginning with the Pom Poms! Remember to keep a good-length piece of wool connected to your pom pom, since we’ll use it to fasten the pom pom to your Party Hat afterward.
We have two favourite ways to make Pom Poms:
You can also prepare the pom poms “in advance” and have your kids colour and assemble the hats on the day!
Today, I’m showing you the finger pom pom method – I really like the appearance of these “scraggily pom poms” on the New Year’s Eve Party hats:
First, position a strand of wool measuring 15-20cm between your ring finger and middle finger – this will be needed to tie off the pom pom later.
Wind plenty of wool around all four fingers.. it will gradually make your fingers bunch together a bit…
Next, use the “loose” strand to bind everything together, then slip the bundle from your fingers:
For me, completing the final knot is simpler after it has been removed from my hand.
Use your siccors to cut through the loops.
Afterward, you can neaten the pom pom slightly.. make sure you LEAVE the tying strands in place, as they’ll be needed again shortly…
Crafting your DIY Party Hat for New Year’s Eve
Start by decorating your hats – choose pens, pencils, crayons, watercolours, stickers, sequence.. anything you like!!! We chose highlighter pens!
Allow them to dry completely.
Cut the designs out.
Place a small piece of tape on one side of the hat. Roll the shape into a cone and fasten it to the opposite side. Alternatively, you can glue this section rather than tape it.
You should now have a cone-shaped hat!
Feed the Pom Pom strands through the top of the hat. If necessary, trim away a small section to enlarge the opening.
Tug the cord until it is firmly secured, then fasten it with tape.
To finish, attach pieces of elastic to both sides of the hat so it can be worn.
All finished! That was simple, wasn’t it?
