We never need much of a reason to cover things with yarn, and this Yarn Lacing Christmas Tree Paper Plate Craft is hard to beat. Along with being a cheerful holiday activity, it also helps develop essential hand/eye coordination skills.
This project is quick and uncomplicated, and there’s a reason for that. The yarn does nearly all the decorating work. We enjoy choosing multi-color yarn skeins to add variation and visual appeal. In fact, the design looks so lovely that no extra embellishments are necessary aside from a star at the top.
A paper plate forms the foundation of our yarn-laced Christmas trees. Since it is firm, the plate handles the yarn being threaded back and forth quite well. It’s such an enjoyable holiday project, and we hope you have as much fun making it as we did!
Paper Plate Christmas Tree Yarn Lacing Craft
For these yarn-laced Christmas trees, gather paper plates, green acrylic paint, multi-color skeins of yarn, a single hole punch, cardstock in yellow and brown, scissors, tape, and a glue stick.

- Paper plates
- Green acrylic paint
- Cardstock – yellow, brown
- Single hole punch
- Multi-color yarn
- Scissors
- Tape
- Glue stick
Paper Plate Christmas Tree Craft Step by Step Directions
Start by covering a paper plate with green acrylic paint.
Allow the paint to dry all the way.
After the paint has dried fully, cut both sides of the plate so they meet at a point. This will create a tree shape resembling a triangle with a rounded bottom.
Using the hole punch, create openings down both edges of the tree shape.
Then, trim a piece of multi-color yarn to a comfortable working length. Secure one end to the back of the tree shape with tape.
Place a short piece of tape around the yarn’s tip to prevent fraying and make threading it through the holes simpler.
Begin threading the yarn through the openings.
Keep lacing until the tree is nicely filled. Fasten the loose end to the back with tape.
Next, sketch and cut a basic star from yellow cardstock. Another option is to use yellow foam stickers or a large star-shaped paper punch.
Attach the star to the top of the tree with glue.
To finish this charming Christmas tree craft, cut a strip of brown cardstock and glue it beneath the tree as the trunk.

Instructions
- Begin by coating a paper plate with green acrylic paint.
