The paper plate unicorn project I’m presenting today is suitable for preschoolers and older children to create throughout the year, regardless of the season or celebration.
This unicorn brings together two of our preferred materials: paper plates and yarn.
Yarn projects allow children to practice their fine motor abilities. They can thread yarn pieces through openings in the paper plate and knot the yarn onto the paper plate.
A complimentary template is included with the paper plate unicorn project and can be located at the bottom of the article. It is a simple design to trace onto a paper plate.
For the horn, choose foam or cardstock. Glitter-covered foam would make it even more special.
This project offers plenty of opportunities for imagination. Children may paint the paper plate in any shade they choose and create either a rainbow mane or a single-color mane.
We painted both of our unicorns pink, though their manes were not the same. One features a long rainbow mane, while the other has a shorter white mane.
If desired, you can include googly eyes as well. Both of our unicorns have closed, sleepy eyes.

- craft paint: pink and purple – this is the brand we use
- black marker
- yarn
- cardstock or foam
- hole punch
- scissors

Steps for creating a paper plate unicorn project
First, trace the unicorn head design onto a paper plate, then cut out the shape.
Color the paper plate pink, then paint the nose purple.
With a hole punch, create openings along the curved edge of the paper plate.
Prepare yarn pieces in equal lengths. Bend each piece in half and pass the fold through a paper plate hole to create a loop. Then, pull the opposite ends through the loop and tighten them to fasten the yarn to the paper plate.
Continue the process with the remaining yarn pieces.
Draw the eye and nostril with a black marker.
Trace the horn onto foam or cardstock, and attach it to the back of the paper plate with glue.
