Whenever I picture summertime and sunny, sandy shores, several classic scenes appear in my mind. One of those scenes features flamingos, stepping gracefully through the shallow waves on their lengthy legs. Even if visiting them in person isn’t possible, you can create your own with this charming Paper Plate Handprint Flamingo Craft!
A few easy snips in a paper plate are all you need to form your very own flamingo. After that, handprints become the feathers for these wonderfully feathery birds. It’s an adorable project and a lovely summer memento combined into one delightful kids’ craft!
Summer Handprint Flamingo Craft
For this flamingo project, gather paper plates, pink and black acrylic paint, pink cardstock, pink pipe cleaners, small googly eyes, scissors, tape, and a glue stick.
Paper Plate Handprint Flamingo Craft Supplies Needed
- Paper plates
- Acrylic paint – pink, black
- Pink cardstock
- Pink pipe cleaners
- Small googly eyes
- Scissors
- Tape
- Glue stick
Flamingo Paper Plate Handprint Craft Step by Step Directions
First, cover a paper plate with pink paint.
Allow the plate to dry all the way.
Once it has dried, slice the paper plate into two halves. Put one half to the side.
Using the remaining half, trim off the outside rim.
Afterward, remove roughly 3 inches from one end.
Shape a pointed beak within the piece that is about 3 inches long.
Color the beak black, then leave it aside to dry.
Next, secure two pink pipe cleaners to the back of the semicircle with tape. The straight side will form the flamingo’s base.
Curve the lower ends of the pipe cleaners into feet. If you want, you can shape the legs as well.
Then, attach the remaining rim/neck section to the semicircle/body in whichever position you prefer.
Attach the beak with glue.
Add a googly eye as well.
Finally, draw around handprints onto pink cardstock. Each flamingo requires 3 handprints.
Carefully cut out each handprint.
Stick the handprints along the flamingo’s side and rear.
