Waffle lovers will have fun preparing these festive Christmas waffles. This recipe is quick and simple – although you can certainly use store-bought waffle mix if you prefer!

Making these Christmas tree waffles was such a delightful activity, and your children will enjoy lending a hand on Christmas morning!
What Type of Food Coloring Should I Use?
Standard food coloring requires quite a bit – nearly an entire bottle – to turn the batter completely green. We prefer concentrated coloring since just a few drops are needed, and a small amount creates a strong color.
This set includes a neon green shade that creates the vivid green color shown on the waffles we prepared.
Using ordinary green food coloring will give the waffles a more classic evergreen appearance.

Why Did My Waffles Turn Brown?
To preserve the green shade, avoid cooking the waffles for too long. Make sure the waffle iron is set to its lowest possible temperature and keep an eye on the waffles while they cook. Waffles that are overdone will become brown, so begin with a very low setting and inspect the first one frequently to determine the proper cooking time.
How to Prepare Christmas Tree Waffles
This waffle recipe is wonderfully fluffy and easy to prepare!

- First, combine all of the dry ingredients.
- Combine the wet ingredients, leaving out the egg whites. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients.
- Whip the egg whites, then fold them into the batter.
- Stir in food coloring until the green reaches your preferred shade. Refer to the note above regarding concentrated coloring (regular coloring also works, but you will need considerably more).

-
Combine the flour, sugar and baking powder in a mixing bowl.
-
Separate the yolks from the whites. In another bowl, gently whisk the egg yolks. Stir the milk, butter and vanilla into the yolks.
-
Pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients.
-
Next, whisk the egg whites until firm peaks develop, either by hand or using an electric hand mixer.
-
Fold the egg whites into the batter and mix until incorporated.
-
Stir in the green food coloring. Continue mixing until the preferred shade of green is reached. Depending on the intensity of your coloring, you might need to use quite a bit.
-
The batter can now be poured into the waffle maker.
-
Set the waffle maker to its lowest available temperature and keep an eye on the waffles while they cook. Overbaking will cause them to brown, so begin with a very low setting and frequently inspect the color of the first waffle.
-
Divide the waffle into 3 sections to create the Christmas tree.
-
Make a star from gold glitter paper, then secure it to a toothpick and place it atop the tree. Remember to take off the star before eating the waffles!
-
Enjoy with Christmas sprinkles and maple syrup.

Since these waffles are intended to be served with maple syrup, they are not especially sweet. If you plan to eat them without maple syrup, consider increasing the sugar to 1/2 cup.
