Celebrate with Firework Crafts
Originally shared in Oct 2021

As noted above, firework crafts make wonderful activities for the year’s main celebrations. I have gathered a selection of our most-loved firework crafts, along with some beautiful fireworks paintings discovered so far (from across the big wide web!!). If you’d like to adapt them for a specific celebration, that is easy to do. Some work brilliantly as classroom activities, while others create charming wall decorations too!

For instance – if you need firework crafts for the 4th of July, simply change the firework colours featured here to red, white and blue. For celebrations such as Bonfire night or Diwali, the more colours you use, the better!

So.. how can you make fireworks kid friendly?

Although we absolutely love fireworks, particularly on New Year’s Eve – why not make them part of your New Year’s Eve countdown activities? Create them instead of using real fireworks. The booming sounds may upset some children, especially those who are very young. Even my 13year old dislikes the crowds and smoke at firework displays. So, how can you make fireworks kid friendly? Take your firework-themed activities and ideas indoors – into a peaceful, secure setting. We especially enjoy creating fireworks paintings, and there are plenty of methods to try, from glue to shaving cream. They are so much fun. Read on to discover more!

Firework Activities for Early Years and Preschool

I will attempt to “organize” these projects into a few general categories, although naturally they overlap slightly. To start, why not try some firework crafts for toddlers and preschoolers – very easy projects that are enjoyable to create and play with! As mentioned, adjust the colours to match different celebrations. For example, choose red, white and blue for the fourth of july, and use LOTS of colour for Diwali or New Year’s Eve. Bonfire night looks wonderful with yellows, oranges and red to represent flames. So gather your paper, scissors, paintbrush and glue, and let’s discover what we can make.

Paper Roll Fireworks for New Year's Eve
Make playful toilet paper roll blowers!

Simple Paper Roll Firework Blowers! These are incredibly sweet and straightforward to create. Reuse tissue paper and Toilet Paper Tubes! As you know, we really enjoy crafting with toilet paper rolls! Don’t have any tissue paper? Try using long pieces of paper instead – cut them into strips and curl them with scissors.

Confetti party poppers

Forget noisy fireworks and create some delightful pom pom party poppers. Fill them with pom poms, confetti or even mini marshmallows… they make a lovely replacement for “noisemakers”!

toddler firework craft
Pipe cleaners are simple and enjoyable for little hands to use!

Fantastic Fun and Learning created these adorable pipecleaner firework rings. Aren’t they charming? Kindergarten children will adore this sweet firework craft and have so much fun making it! It is a lovely little project to add to your New Year’s Eve party games set up.

Pipe-cleaner bubble wands have been a favourite for years!

I am going to “slip” my New Year’s Eve bubble wands in here.. Simply because they are incredibly cute and well-loved.. and aren’t bubbles somewhat like fireworks… mmh. Okay, perhaps that is a little far-fetched. Still, toddlers will enjoy these wonderful little wands at any celebration party. I think they would be especially adorable in red, white and blue for 4th July too (or replace the colours for another independence day celebration so they match your country’s flag)! Preschoolers will also enjoy threading the beads – it is excellent for fine motor development, and you could even try some sequencing!

Paper Firework Crafts

Now, we certainly enjoy some paper crafting.. although these projects could just as easily belong in the toddler fireworks craft section or in the Firework Art projects later on.

Cupcake liners create surprisingly fantastic fireworks and are great fun to use.

This 3d Paper Cupcake Liner Firework project from a Little Pinch of Perfect is one I really adore. It is ideal for developing fine motor scutting skills, and the finished effect is so lovely! You might even adapt the idea and “go large” with painted coffee filters?

Yes.. these are questions people ask frequently, and I hope the projects below will provide the answers! Naturally, there are MANY different ways to make your own firework art! Collages are always enjoyable and can be wonderfully bright. Let’s explore some fantastic

inspiration for you.

We adore this easy paper quilling activity that creates beautiful swirling fireworks!

Projects with Kids features a charming paper “cityscape” scene enhanced with paper-quilled fireworks. A dark evening sky provides the ideal backdrop for firework art! The tiny stars added to the paper quills create an especially sparkling finish.

Salt Firework Crafts – combining salt with paint is incredibly enjoyable, and the finished designs look amazing! Crafty News demonstrates how to make them. We really appreciate creative ideas that encourage artistic exploration. If preferred, you could make this activity simpler by using glitter glue instead! But the salt painting is our favourite!

How do you make Fireworks in a jar?

The “classic” Firework in a Jar activity is a favourite firework experiment for celebrations of all kinds. It makes a terrific science activity for bonfire night, Diwali or New Year’s Eve:

fireworks in a jar

These Glowing Fireworks in a Jar from Growing a Jewelled Rose may just steal the show and are another enjoyable activity to try! Be sure to read the complete instructions before presenting it to the children. You might prefer the traditional Fireworks in a Jar method from Science Sparks, which has been tested in classrooms many times – it is simpler, creates less mess and is potentially safer. Still, that incredible photograph was too tempting to leave out!

Recycled Firework Ideas and Activities

As you know, we enjoy recycling and making our projects as environmentally friendly as possible (so I feel slightly guilty about the glow-in-the-dark fireworks above… although they are incredibly cool!).

Several of the art projects above already use reused materials, and the “real” water bottle rocket featured near the beginning of the post is another excellent upcycling idea. Let’s gather our leftover supplies and create some Firework Rockets!

toilet roll firework rocket
Toilet rolls belong in every children’s activity collection! They are plentiful and wonderfully versatile for crafting.

Firework crafts made with toilet paper rolls are definitely a “MUST”! Over the years, we have created plenty of Toilet Paper Roll Rockets, and they are naturally a perfect “symbol” of fireworks. Personalise the design by using red, blue and white for a 4th July Rocket, or change the colours and add details such as a Diya light to turn it into a Diwali Craft!

bonfire night
This campfire craft is an amazing choice for Bonfire night!!

Okay, it may not technically be a FIREWORK craft, but this glowing bonfire project from Buggy & Buddy is far too adorable to exclude from this collection of firework ideas for children!
