Every morning, my son asks to wear his Batman shirt, and I’m certain that if he owned a Batman costume, he would insist on keeping it on all day. Sadly for him, he doesn’t have one because I don’t let my children leave the house wearing costumes unless it’s Halloween. That doesn’t mean I fail to encourage their love of superheroes. I simply find different ways to celebrate it, and creating superhero grass pots is one of them.
The boys had so much fun with Mr and Mrs Hairy – the grass pot heads we made at the start of spring – that I decided to do another version. It became a kind of farewell-to-summer activity. This time, I chose two characters who are part of our daily lives: Batman and Spider Man.
How to Create Your Own Superhero Grass Pots
Materials: terracotta pots, acrylic paint, a black Sharpie and grass seeds.
Step 1: Trace the superhero emblem (Batman) or face (Spider Man). To simplify the process, I printed the logo and face, cut them out, and used them as stencils to trace onto the pots. On the Batman pot, I also sketched apartment buildings along the bottom and around the sides.
Step 2: Cover the background with blue paint. I painted about an inch down the inside of each pot as well.
Step 3: Paint the remaining sections of the pots. With a black Sharpie, add details such as the apartment windows and bat on the Batman grass pot, along with the eye outlines and spider web on the Spider Man grass pot.
Step 4: Fill the pots with soil, then sow your seeds. Grass seeds aren’t your only option; wheat or rye will work too. Cat grass seeds are sold in smaller packets and are simple to grow indoors throughout the year.
Step 5: Water the pots and wait for the grass to sprout. Take care not to give them too much water. I made that error with the Spider Man pot and couldn’t figure out why its grass wasn’t growing as tall and dense as the grass in the other pot. Eventually, I chose to begin again, and while changing the soil, I discovered that many of the seeds had rotted and that the dirt smelled absolutely terrible.
We never managed to see Spider Man with long green hair because I dropped the pot on the kitchen floor one day while taking it outside onto the deck. I usually brought the pots indoors whenever it rained. The pot shattered, but this was his finest appearance:
