For children, Santa and all he symbolizes are truly the most wonderful parts of Christmas. As we grow older, as I have, the holiday becomes more focused on generosity. Even so, Santa remains at the heart of it all. He is one of the special elements that makes Christmas magical.
With December arriving and the festive season getting underway, we’re celebrating the upcoming holiday with this sweet Santa project. Before long, the cheerful old fellow will be traveling across the globe. Until that time comes, this craft is a delightful way to celebrate.
Moving Santa Christmas Paper Plate Project
Before creating our moving Santa project, start by printing the Santa sleigh template.
For the remaining materials, gather paper plates, jumbo craft sticks, a black marker, a glue stick, scissors, and a stapler. You will also require acrylic paint in black, white, yellow, and red, along with cardstock in white, red, and pink.
Supplies Required for the Santa Sleigh Paper Plate Project
- Santa Sleigh Template
- Paper plate
- Jumbo craft sticks
- Acrylic paint – black, white, yellow, and red
- Cardstock – white, red, pink
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Stapler
- Glue stick
Step-by-Step Instructions for the Paper Plate Santa Project
First, print the template onto white cardstock.
Next, cover one complete paper plate with black acrylic paint. Allow it to dry thoroughly. Afterward, use the white paint to create a basic moon. Splatter additional white paint across the plate to represent stars.
Slice another paper plate into two pieces, trace the template, and cut it out once more to form the sleigh.
Cover the sleigh with red acrylic paint and leave it aside to dry. When it has dried, use yellow paint to outline its upper edge.
Take the leftover half of the second paper plate, trace the sleigh legs from the template, and cut them out. Paint the pieces yellow and let them dry.
As the paint dries, cut out the rest of the template pieces. Trace the chimney onto red cardstock and cut it out. Use a black marker to draw brick accents on the chimney.
Trace Santa’s hat onto red cardstock and cut it out. Keep his beard white, along with the hat’s trim. Next, put Santa’s head together by attaching the template pieces. Cut a small pink cardstock circle for his face. Glue everything in place and draw on his eyes. Secure a jumbo craft stick to the back of Santa’s head.
After that, attach the chimney to the black-painted paper plate with glue. Fasten the two paper plates together with a stapler, leaving enough room for the craft stick to slide through.
Next, trace the present shapes onto the cardstock colors you prefer and cut them out. Glue the pieces together.
Attach the presents to the paper plate so they appear to be sticking out of the sleigh.
To finish, slide in the popsicle stick and move Santa around his sleigh with this adorable, entertaining Christmas craft!

- Draw brick patterns on the chimney using a black marker.
- Trace Santa’s hat onto red cardstock and cut it out. Keep his beard and hat trim white. Assemble Santa’s head by joining the template pieces. Cut a small pink cardstock circle for his face. Glue all the pieces together and add eyes.
- Fasten a jumbo craft stick to the back of Santa’s head.
- Then, glue the chimney onto the paper plate painted black.
- Staple the two paper plates together, ensuring that an opening remains for the craft stick.
- Next, trace and cut the present shapes from the cardstock colors you selected. Glue the pieces together.
- Attach the presents to the paper plate so they look like they are peeking from the sleigh.
- Finally, insert the popsicle stick and slide Santa around his sleigh in this charming and playful Christmas project!
