These projects are suitable for children of every age, from preschoolers through elementary-aged and older kids too!
First, let’s learn a little about St Patrick’s Day and the well-known Shamrock symbol before exploring our fantastic crafts for kids!
Are Shamrocks and Four Leaf Clovers the same?
When it comes to crafting and St Patrick’s Day decorations, the short answer is NO! A Shamrock has 3 petals, whereas a four leaf clover has, as its name suggests, four! Therefore, if you want to create something “authentic” for St Patrick’s Day, your Shamrocks should really include only 3 petals. Still, if you find a craft you adore and it features four… you can absolutely make it. Simply modify the shamrock template! Most shamrocks can be formed by joining 3 hearts with a stem, so creating the shape is actually quite simple!
From a botanical perspective.. the answer may be yes. In Ireland, 3 leaf clovers, wood sorrels, and medicks grow plentifully, and a Shamrock could refer to any of these three plants. However, its exact origins are uncertain (no pun intended).
So when crafting for St Patrick’s Day.. try to create 3 heart shaped leaves along with a stem!
Why are Shamrocks considered Lucky?
So, is it truly a Lucky Shamrock or simply a Shamrock? There are numerous ideas about why Shamrocks play such an important role in St Patrick’s Day celebrations. As noted, Shamrocks (meaning clovers, wood sorrels or medicks) grow freely throughout Ireland. Some believe they were used to represent the Holy Trinity… while others think they helped protect people from evil spirits and provided magical protection. Whatever your beliefs, the Shamrock is generally viewed as a lucky charm!

Shamrock Crafts for Preschoolers
Let’s begin with a few shamrock projects for preschoolers. As mentioned, these categories are only “loosely” divided by age, and I think many of the ideas are appropriate for children of all ages. This is especially true in a classroom environment, where children may need to complete activities more independently. Let’s explore our shamrock projects!
One of Red Ted Art’s favourite projects for this festive season – Yarn Wrapped Shamrocks (with template) – is particularly charming for preschoolers, although children of every age can have fun creating this wonderful craft!
This paper plate shamrock project is actually a St Patrick’s Day Tambourine!! You can create it as an enjoyable musical instrument for the holiday OR.. if you like its appearance, it would also work beautifully as wall art or even a suncatcher. Adorable Shamrock Bookmarks
This beautiful paper-quilled shamrock uses an empty toilet paper roll to form its outline, and we originally made it as a wonderful St Patrick’s Day Craft. However, I believe they would also serve as charming shamrock decorations.
Accordion fold Paper Shamrock Decorations – this paper-folding method is a favorite because it looks beautiful and reflects the light in playful ways. Create 3 heart-shaped pieces, then join them with a small amount of glue and add a stem. So easy! Craft a collection of these paper shamrocks and hang them together as a garland.
These 3d Paper Shamrocks are created from green hearts. They would look beautiful as wall decorations or could be placed on the front of a greeting card!
About a Mom presents some gorgeous Spin Art Shamrocks. Wouldn’t these look especially lovely arranged as a shamrock garland? Simply fasten them to string, yarn or baker’s twine using a staple or a piece of tape, and you’re finished.
