I’ve always admired the lavish rugs sold at upscale retailers such as Pottery Barn, Magnolia, McGee & Co., and Serena & Lily. However, those price points can certainly be surprising!

This week, I selected several bestselling rugs from well-known designer retailers and searched online for affordable duplicates with the same aesthetic at a small fraction of the price. And wow, I discovered some incredible options!!
While looking for these wallet-friendly substitutes, I focused on rugs that received favorable customer feedback. Still, although these alternatives look remarkably similar, remember that they won’t match the quality of a $1,500 wool rug purchased from the designer retailer.

Choosing the Ideal Size
Before exploring my rug selections, let’s review a few important basics for deciding what will work in your room. One frequent challenge is choosing the right rug dimensions. A properly proportioned rug can greatly influence a room’s appearance and ambiance.
Living Area Rugs
- Compact Living Room: A 5×7 or 6×9 rug may be a great fit. Try to position the sofa’s front legs on the rug.
- Average-Sized Living Room: An 8×10 rug is commonly a smart choice. For a unified appearance, keep all furniture legs on the rug.
- Spacious Living Room: A 9×12 or larger rug can ground the room. You may want to leave a wide margin around its edges.
Bedroom Area Rugs
- Set the rug near the foot of the bed. A 5×7 rug is generally adequate for a queen bed. With a king-size bed, think about using a 6×9 or 8×10 rug.
- For those who want a bigger rug, slide it beneath the bed so part of it extends on both sides. This arrangement can bring a warm, upscale feel to the room.
Dining Area Rugs
- Smaller Dining Room: Choose a rug that reaches at least 24 inches past every side of the dining table. This gives chairs room to slide out without catching on the rug.
