Creating Thanksgiving Handprint Crafts

1. Set up your painting space.

• Print the patterns on white paper or cardstock, then place them to the side temporarily.
• Collect your paint shades – we chose orange, yellow, brown, and green.
• Pour warm, soapy water into a large dish or bowl and take it to your workspace with several clean cloths, towels, baby wipes, and paper towels. Preparing these supplies beforehand will make tidying up much easier.
• When making the footprint projects, also bring a small stool or child-sized chair to the painting station.

2. Create the handprint patterns.

Brush non-toxic tempera paint across your child’s palm.

Help your child press their hand onto the paper, applying firm pressure so it leaves a clear handprint.

Raise their hand from the page and assist them in washing it with warm, soapy water. Put the painted sheet aside to air-dry.

3. Make the footprint patterns.

Seat your child on a short stool or chair, then spread non-toxic tempera paint over the sole of their foot. Help them press it onto the page firmly enough to create a distinct footprint.

Assist them as they lift their foot from the paper and place it into the bowl of warm, soapy water, using a cloth to remove the paint.

For the pumpkin pie pattern, spread the same orange paint over the opposite foot and press it down once more.

Lift and clean the other foot, then leave the paper aside until it has dried fully.

4. Finish with the final accents.

After the handprint is dry, draw a small eye on the thumb with a black marker to represent the turkey’s eye. Next, use orange paint for the beak and red paint for the wattle and head accents. Allow everything to dry.
