Collect a few vacant paper egg cartons and create our charming Egg Carton Penguin Craft this winter! This delightful cold-season project for children is so enjoyable, and these tiny penguins are irresistibly cute. They even appear prepared to waddle away into the snow.
This charming penguin project takes inspiration from Cody in Surf’s Up, featuring an orange hair tuft atop its head and a basic orange cardstock bill. We also included orange feet to give it an even sweeter appearance.
Creating this craft together was such a joy. Since an adult needs to help with the beginning steps, it became a project we made as a team. For instance, an adult should cut the egg cups from the carton. They should also carefully create the opening on top for the orange feather-like hair. After those steps are finished, children will have a wonderful time painting and embellishing the faces of their tiny penguins!
Winter Penguin Egg Carton Craft
For this penguin project, gather paper egg cartons, black acrylic paint, a white paint pen, orange cardstock, orange pipe cleaner, small self-adhesive googly eyes, 1” circle paper punch, scissors, and a glue stick.
Supplies for the Egg Carton Penguin Craft
Step-by-Step Penguin Craft Instructions
Start by separating the cups from a paper egg carton.
Smooth the edges into a rounded shape as best you can, then cut the bottom so the cup rests evenly.
Next, cover the egg carton cups with black acrylic paint and allow them to dry.
After the cups have dried fully, take a white paint pen and fill in a white area across the front.
Using a pen tip, the point of a pair of scissors, or a similar tool, carefully create a tiny opening in the top of the cup.
Next, divide an orange pipe cleaner into four equal pieces.
Shape a small M in the center of the pipe cleaner, then twist the ends together to hold it in place.
Push the pipe cleaner through the opening at the top of the egg carton cup.
After that, cut a little triangle out of orange cardstock and glue it on as the beak.
Attach two small self-adhesive googly eyes.
To finish the feet, we used a 1” circle paper punch to create two circles. Alternatively, you can simply cut out two small circles by hand.
Cut the circle edges until they resemble three penguin toes.
Finally, attach the feet underneath the penguin with glue to finish this adorable little winter craft.

Instructions
- First, separate the cups from a paper egg carton. Smooth the edges into a rounded shape as much as possible, then trim the base so it rests flat.
- Next, coat the egg carton cups in black acrylic paint and let them dry.
- When the egg carton cups are fully dry, use a white paint marker to add a white patch across the front.
- Carefully use a pen tip, scissor point, or a comparable tool to form a small opening in the top of the cup.
- Then, divide an orange pipe cleaner into four sections.
- Form a small M shape in the center of the pipe cleaner.
- Twist the ends together so the shape stays secure.
- Feed the pipe cleaner through the hole at the top of the egg carton cup.
- Next, cut a small triangle from orange cardstock and glue it on as the beak.
- Stick on two small self-adhesive googly eyes.
- Finally, use a 1” circle paper punch to make two circles for the feet, or cut two small circles by hand instead.
- Shape the circle so it resembles three penguin toes.
- To complete the adorable winter penguin, glue the feet onto its underside.
