This St. Patrick’s Day cardboard roll leprechaun project is excellent for developing scissor skills. Once he’s painted and wearing his trusty hat, create the beard and then return with scissors to give it a trim. It’s also an adorable variation of our Give Dad a Haircut Scissor Craft!
How to Trim the Leprechaun’s Beard
For our Trim the Leprechaun’s Beard Scissor Craft, gather a cardboard roll, orange acrylic paint, cardstock in green, black, and yellow, a black sharpie, small googly eyes, and a glue stick.
The key item you’ll need, however, is a pair of scissors.
Trim the Leprechaun’s Beard Craft Supplies Needed
- Cardboard tubes
- Orange acrylic paint
- Cardstock – green, black, yellow
- Black sharpie
- Small googly eyes
- Glue stick
- Scissors
Leprechaun’s Beard Scissor Activity Step by Step Instructions
Start with a cardboard roll that is the size of a toilet paper tube.
Cover the bottom ⅔ of the roll with orange paint. Allow it to dry fully.
Attach the googly eyes. Self-sticking googly eyes are ideal for cardboard rolls. We often find that glued eyes don’t stay attached properly to the roll.
Draw basic nose and mouth details with the black sharpie.
Next, trim the green cardstock into an easy hat shape that fits over the roll, including a brim and a smaller rectangle for the top. Cut a narrower strip from the black cardstock and a smaller yellow square as well.
Use glue to assemble all the pieces.
After that, make two cuts into the top of the roll, one on each side.
Insert the hat through the slits.
To finish, cut upward into the orange beard around the entire roll.
Now the leprechaun is ready for a beard trim!
