Black Glue Heart Art Project

Hello Red Ted Art readers! My name is Rachel, and I’m the creative person behind the I Heart Crafty Things blog. I specialise in making enjoyable, easy children’s arts and crafts projects for imaginative kids to enjoy alongside their families. I was thrilled when Maggy invited me to take part in her 31 Days of Love Series again this year, and sharing my enthusiasm for black glue art projects seemed like the ideal choice.

This black glue heart art project is vivid and cheerful, bringing to mind lovely stained glass windows. It makes a beautiful standalone artwork for displaying, or you can transform your black glue creation into charming Valentine’s Day cards.

To make this black glue artwork easier for you, I’ve put together a template you can download (enter $0 at check out for a freebie). Alternatively, you can design your own unique heart pattern.

How to Create your Black Glue Heart Art Project

Make your black glue

1. Start by preparing your black glue. For this, take a bottle of white school glue (or PVA glue) that is approximately 75% full. Unscrew the lid and add a generous amount of black acrylic paint. Replace the cap, then shake the glue bottle vigorously for several minutes so the paint blends in as thoroughly as possible.

Next, take off the glue lid and mix the contents with a skewer or stick. The handle of a paintbrush is also suitable for stirring. You might have to shake and stir the bottle repeatedly until all the paint is blended and the glue becomes black. This how-to video making black glue might be super helpful.

Draw your stained glass heart outlines

2. Download your heart printable and print it on your mixed media paper. If you prefer, sketch your own pattern onto the mixed media paper with a pencil.

3. Before outlining the heart printable with black glue, try the glue on a napkin or an extra sheet of paper. Draw a few lines to test how the glue moves and spreads. Once you’re satisfied with its flow, carefully trace the lines of your heart printable using a steady hand.

4. Allow the black glue to dry fully, preferably overnight. This is essential because painting before the glue has completely dried can cause the watercolors to mix with the black paint as you work.

Add colour to the stained glass hearts

5. Use watercolors to paint your black glue heart artwork. We especially enjoy the intensity of liquid watercolors, though regular watercolor paints work well too. We arranged our shades in a checkerboard design. Choosing one color combination for the heart and another for the background will make the heart pop.

6. Once your black glue project has dried completely, trim away the excess paper surrounding the heart. Then attach the heart artwork to a sheet of black cardstock to create a polished border. Your finished heart art can now be displayed for Valentine’s Day.
